Miletich Fighting System product Joe Pearson scored a victory last night over Mainstream MMA Lightweight champion, John Strawn at MSMMA 7: Vengeance.
“It’s sweeter than I ever imagined, it’s just great,” Pearson said. “It’s a dream come true, I’m just waiting to wake up.”
Pearson needed all of 29 seconds to win the fight. Pearson won the fight on a flying triangle choke.
“I wasn’t planning it, he gave it to me,” Pearson said. “I could hear him gurgling and I was thinking, just finish him, don’t let him out.
Pearson plans on staying with MSMMA for awhile and taking on all competitors, challenging him for his title.
“I’m here to defend this title against whomever they put in front of me, they treated me great and I’m just looking to come back, whoever they want me to fight, I’ll fight,” Pearson said.
Strawn could not be reached for comment. There was plenty of other action at MSMMA 7, last night.
In other action
Former Pride fighter Clay French won his 14th bout last night, when he submitted Bobby Mosley via armbar in just 1:29 in the first round.
French started the fight with a takedown and getting caught in a half guard. After a kimura attempt, French managed to get into a sidemount. When there, he attempted another kimura and then turned it into an armbar.
A Good Old Fashion Rope-A-Dope
One of the more interesting fights of the night took place between two heavyweights, Alex Rozman and Rashad Brooks. Brooks won the fight at the 2:18 mark via a knockout, but it was how the fight went that produced a lot of excitement at the Memorial Veterans Coliseum.
Both fighters made exchanges to start the round, when Rozman rocked Brooks, thus starting a barrage by Rozman. When Brooks escaped, Brooks all of the sudden unleashed a flurry of strikes on Rozman and the fight turned into a slugfest on both ends, with blood literally flying everywhere. It certainly was a classic Rope-A-Dope.
Brooks then knocked out a weary Rozman and the fight was stopped. A couple of seconds later, Brooks, still loaded with adrenaline, proceeded to jump back on Rozman and throw a couple more punches. The ref and Brooks’ corner managed to pull him off. The fight brought excitement to the audience and brought them out of their seats.
Fight of the Night
As exciting of a fight as Brooks and Rozman was, the fight of the night was Micah Washington against Rod Montoya. Washington won the fight at 1:52 in the third round, via an armbar.
For three rounds, both fighters battled back-and-forth and brought a ton of excitement to the Coliseum. Both fighters attacked each other with knees to open up the first round. Montoya would get the takedown, eventually losing positioning on a reversal. After a lot of maneuvering on both sides, reversals, submission attempts, round one ended with Washington on top. The Iowa MMA Report scored it 10-9 in favor of Washington.
Round two started with both fighters in a clinch, eventually leading to a takedown by Montoya, Washington kept him in an open guard. Montoya got full mount at one point, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Regardless, the Iowa MMA Report scored it, 10-9 Montoya.
Micah Washington started out the third round with a nice hook to Montoya. ‘The Mexicutioner’ would once again find himself in full mount, but once again failed to stop the fight.
Washington once again took top position and after attempting a guillotine choke, he managed to grab a hold of Montoya’s arm and get an armbar and the fight was over.
The crowd cheered loudly for Montoya, but Washington had his own cheering section on the floor of the arena. They made their presence loud and clear.
